When you think of someone who is extremely resourceful, what do you picture?  Do you think of someone wealthy, and well-connected? Or do you imagine someone who is creative, intelligent and determined? Where do these people draw their resources from, internally or externally? Think about some examples of external resources, money, technology, land, electricity, and other people. What about some examples of internal resources, such as courage, knowledge, attitude, creativity, self-discipline and determination. How many more can you add to this list? Which is more important to you? Which do you spend the most time developing?

Consider these differences between inner and outer resources:

Depletion.  Your inner resources are not depleted when used. In fact, the more you use them the stronger they become. Outer resources are usually diminished from use, or there is an additional resource drain to use them.

Conversion.  It would be easier to use your inner resources to create outer resources. For example if you were creative and very disciplined you could earn a lot of money, but if you were rich, you couldn’t really buy a creative and disciplined mind.

Transferability. Inner resources are tied to an individual. Outer resources can be transferred from one person to another.

If you were forced to make a choice, would you rather give up all your inner resources or you outer resources?  If you retained your creativity, knowledge, passion, courage and determination wouldn’t  you eventually be able to recreate anything you might desire? If you are wondering what to invest in, isn’t the best place to invest in yourself?
