Are You Inventive?

A message from Sandy. Is the ability to invent and inborn trait? To be inventive what kind of environment would you need?An environment of encouragement? What skills would be needed? I would say creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, flexibility, risk-taking, collaboration and communication. I would guess that all inventive people must share some of the same qualities like curiosity (there’s that word again), persistence, imagination and improvisation. Mistakes must also be an important ingredient.

If you asked a group of kids “Are you inventive?” almost all of them would immediately raise their hands. What would happen if we posed the same question to a group of adults? Would they be reluctant to respond? Why the gap? Do you think there is too much emphasis on coming up with the “right answer”; failure is seen as a bad thing, rather than a learning opportunity? It seems it takes a certain kind of mind to look at a problem and a mistake and join them together to create something new.

Consider that many inventors seem to retain the curiosity they had as a child. Inventors are always asking questions, “What if I tried this? What if we did it this way?” Maybe the heart of inventiveness is play, making room for free time, letting your mind wander, instead of rushing off to your next commitment. How can you encourage your own inventiveness?
