Social Media: The Two-Edged Sword
written by Terry - June 15th, 2010 at 4:08 am
As technological advances, the world seems to spin faster and grow more impersonal. But progress can also provide new procedures and advanced techniques that make our lives healthier and happier.
Are we ostriches, hiding our heads in the sand, hoping progress will pass us by? Or are we gate-keepers, examining new advances, then adopting the best and side-stepping the rest?
Social media is a particularly “mixed bag.” Sites like Facebook and Twitter can be tempting time-wasters. But the positive side is the ability of those sites to unite like-minded people, regardless of their location, providing an efficient, inexpensive way to share information. While nothing surpasses the warmth and excitement of meeting in person, well-used social media sites can deliver:
- Real-time online chats
- Videos you can view at your convenience
- Blogs to provide food for thought and a venue for comments
- Tweets for bite-sized inspiration
Which of these have you explored? How have they enriched your team?

I love this! Our office is exploring many of the different social medias. It’s interesting how many different opinions and feelings the team members have, it’s certainly opened up some lively discussions! Can’t wait to see what happens next!
