RAISING YOUR “AQ”

Running in the same direction

A Message from Terry: If your team has decided that they want to raise their AQ – their “Accountability Quotient,” how can they go about it?

An essential first step is to agree on a common goal. That may sound obvious, but it’s often overlooked.  Imagine a team of four powerful horses harnessed to the same wagon. Each one is earnestly pulling as hard as it can…but the wagon is going nowhere. Why? Because one horse is harnessed to the front of the wagon, one to the rear, one to the right side and one to the left. Their well-intentioned efforts are cancelling each other out!

Don’t simply assume that the other members of your team share your vision or automatically understand the goal toward which you’re trying to progress. Instead, take the time to sit down as a group and communicate clearly about where the team should be headed and how that goal can best be reached.

Once your team has a clearly expressed and agreed-upon goal, members can devote their united energies to moving forward, instead of straining against one another in a counter-productive tug-of-war!
