A message from Terry: Days, weeks or even months ago, you and your team identified a problem, discussed possible solutions, agreed upon a plan and put it into action. For a while, things improved…but now the ‘solution’ seems to be causing as much trouble as the problem itself.  What went wrong?

There are, of course, many possible reasons. But the simplest, most generic answer may be “something changed.”  The world is a slippery place. People and circumstances change and evolve. As a result, you may be trying to use an “old” solution to fix something that has become a “new” problem.

Don’t cling to old agreements and solutions just because they used to work. When deciding whether the time is right to renegotiate, look at the old solution and ask yourself, “What has it done for us lately?” Perhaps, in the very process of beginning to solve the problem, you’ve outgrown the original solution and are ready to reassess and take the next step.

Can you pinpoint a “problem area” that has evolved and might benefit from renegotiation and a fresh approach?
