Measure Your Progress

A stopwatch?  A ruler?  A calendar?  A journal?

A message from Terry: As different as these objects are from one another, they have something important in common – they all enable people to measure something.

“What’s so important about that?” you may ask.

Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret: Things that you measure tend to improve.

It makes sense, when you think about. Few problems in life get better when we ignore them. In order to create positive change, attention must be paid. The gift of our attention is like sunshine to a newly planted seed – it creates a warm and encouraging environment.

Of course, paying attention by just staring at a problem isn’t enough. The secret ingredient is our willingness to measure what we observe. By getting specific, we can establish where things currently stand. From there, if no change occurs, or if the change is in the wrong direction, our measurements alert us to the problem so that we can alter our approach. But if the change is positive, moving us in the direction of our goals, we can take heart, redoubling our efforts confidently because we know that we’re on the right track!

What problem have you tackled that remained stubbornly unchanged? What aspect of it can you measure, to give your efforts new focus and force?
