Don’t Get Boxed-In

Boxed-In “The answer to how is yes.” Peter Block

A message from Terry: Order and organization are essential elements in the smooth operation of your office. Without them, chaos can ensue. But formula can also work against you, on occasion. From time to time, it’s important to take a step back, the better to gain some much-needed perspective on way things are working – or failing to work.

Is there a persistent bottle-neck in some office routine? A ‘black hole’ into which items or inquiries frequently vanish? A new challenge or request that seems to have everyone stumped?

If so, try the following steps:

  • Think outside the box.

It’s more than a cliché. When the tried and true just isn’t cutting it,

shake off old restrictions and reach for a creative solution.

  • Draw a mind map.

On a blank sheet, write the problem in the center of the page, set a timer

for two minutes, then write down as many different ideas and approaches

as you can dream up before time runs out.

  • Make a move!

Pick one of those new ideas and take it for a test drive! Even if the one

you try initially doesn’t work perfectly, you keep monitoring effectiveness and adjust as you go forward.

What stubborn problem in your office might benefit from a creative new approach?
