IT’S NOT THE MONEY

A message from Terry: Cynics and skeptics often claim that team loyalty is a direct result of the numbers that appear on your paycheck, but a Gallup Poll tells quite a different story. After questioning a million employees and 80,000 managers about what motivated them to stay in their current positions, the poll reported that salary didn’t make the Top 5.
Or even the Top 10.
In fact, it barely made the Top 15!
So if money isn’t the key that motivates people to be loyal to their jobs, what were the most frequently named reasons? The top five reasons that team members gave, in ascending order, were:
- Number 5: A degree of control over their work and their work environment.
- Number 4: Opportunity for growth.
- Number 3: The opportunity to feel challenged.
- Number 2: Recognition for good work
- Number 1: An approachable leader that they trust.
It isn’t as if salary doesn’t matter. After all, everybody has bills to pay. But it’s comforting, when you think about it, that the supposedly almighty dollar didn’t win First Place in a landslide. For the million employees who were interviewed, it was more important that they valued their own independence and creativity, that they felt appreciated, and that they had a leader who inspired their confidence.
When it comes to job satisfaction, what factors make your Top Five?
