THE MEASURE OF TIME

Measure of Time

“There is more to life than increasing its speed.” Mahatma Gandhi

A message from Terry:  Time is a peculiar thing. Sometimes it seems to race past, leaving us in a cloud of dust. Other times, it creeps along, each passing moment clinging to us like a sleepy toddler.

A popular business axiom asserts that “time is money,” equating speed with profit. But that is only part of the picture, because it can be equally true that “haste makes waste.” Your office is not a conveyor belt. Patients are not robots or identical pieces of machinery – and neither are you.

The trick here is to choose your style wisely. Efficiency is a valuable attribute, but not when you sacrifice quality to achieve it. Look past the surface of your schedule and think creatively about the tasks that make up your day. Which of them can be streamlined, and which of them, instead, might benefit from a more thoughtful approach?

We have the power to transform our own attitudes and perceptions. Start small. Pick a single task out of your busy day – the task that you think might benefit most from a more mindful approach. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you will do it slowly. It does mean that you will carry it out with conscious intention, staying fully present in the moment.

What task can you choose to transform today?
