Help Your Team Learn From Mistakes

A message from Sandy. How do you keep mistakes in perspective? A person must first utter the three most difficult words to say: ” I was wrong.” We must open our eyes, admit our mistakes, and accept complete responsibility for our current actions and attitudes. Every failure we experience is a fork in the road. It is an opportunity to take the right action, learn from our mistakes, and begin again.
Leadership expert Peter Drucker says, “The better a man is, the more mistakes he will make, for the more things he will try. I would never promote to a top-level job a man who was not making mistakes………otherwise he is sure to be mediocre.” Mistakes really do pave the road to achievement.
From the book Failing Forward, by John Maxwell, here is an acronym he created to help us keep our mistakes in perspective:
M—-messages that give us feedback about life
I—-interruptions that should cause us to reflect and think
S—-signposts that direct us to the right path
T—-tests that push us toward greater maturity
A—-awakenings that keep us in the game mentally
K—-keys that we can use to unlock the next door of opportunity
E—explorations that let us journey where we have never been before
S—statements about our development and progress
His advice: ” Look for ways to praise your people’s mistakes and help you team learn from them.”
