LEADING THE WAY

A message from Terry: Some people claim that the world is made up of leaders and followers. But the world is too complicated for such a simple (and simplistic) division because, as Tom Peters says, “Leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders.”
With that in mind, it’s important for everyone to think about the qualities that make up good leadership, regardless of where in the chain of command they currently find themselves. Consider this list of five things that effective leaders need to do with – and for – their followers:
- Envision;
- Inspire;
- Take initiative;
- Focus on the positive; and
- Help a group to reach a goal.
It isn’t easy, balancing all of those elements in a real-world work environment. Keep that in mind, on those days when you’re feeling critical about the leadership you’re receiving. It’s also wise to review the list when you’re preparing to tackle your own leadership opportunities.
Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand.”
— General Colin Powel
Clarity is one of the most helpful gifts you can give to people you are directing, and one of the most helpful gifts you can receive from those who are directing you. When you and your group all see the goal clearly and agree upon its importance, many of the obstacles in your path will melt away.
And, in case you sometimes feel as if the psychology of leadership is just some New Age mumbo-jumbo, let’s close with the advice of Lao-Tsu, a man of wisdom who lived in China around 600 B.C.
“To lead people, walk beside them … As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate … When the best leader’s work is done the people say, ‘We did it ourselves!’
