Today is a New Day

A message from Terry:  So, how can you improve the work climate in your office?

Start inside your own head. When you arrive for the day, what are your expectations? When you get off the bus or pull into your parking place, do you feel sluggish, neutral, or energized? Do you expect the day to be a chore, a bore, or something you adore?

If your expectations for the coming day fall into the “chore” or “bore” category, don’t just accept it. Ask yourself why, and see whether one of the following categories sounds familiar:

  • Is your attitude in need of a general overhaul and tune-up?
  • Did you sabotage your feelings about today by putting off tasks that you disliked, yesterday?
  • Are you trying to stay positive but feel as if you’re swimming upstream against a strong current of negative attitudes from others on your team?

Whatever the cause, consider these five quotations about “attitude,” as they gradually widen the focus from the inner you to the outer team.

“Problems are only opportunities in work clothes.” Henry J. Kaiser

“To succeed, one must be creative and persistent.” John H. Johnson

“Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.” Robert H. Schuller

“Making good decisions is a crucial skill at every level.” Peter Drucker

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” Henry Ford

Remember that no two days are alike. Things change. People change. Something that doesn’t work, today, may be just the ticket, tomorrow! Supply some sunshine, weed the problem areas, and you may be surprised by what blossoms. After all, offices and gardens have more in common than you might think!
