Imagination Gets A Bum Rap

A message from Sandy. The stuff of childhood play, imagination is often miscatergorized as childish. Most of us go through a point in our growing up years when we think it is necessary to “put away childish things,” including our imagination and imaginary friends. (miss them don’t you?) I think that imagination is the key to creating meaning in our lives. Before you think my theory is nuts, consider this–before a scientist can test a theory, he/she must imagine it. Before an engineer can design a complicated structure, he/she must imagine it. And yet, how many of us exercise our imaginations? When we really, really absolutely need to think differently and come up with answers to complicated problems, how many of will be able to imagine those answers?
Imagination is the most serious aspect of childhood. Through playing, kids define their identities, and are able to see themselves as superheroes, explorers, or spies. Imagination? Especially when we’ve tucked it away with our childhood, what happens when you allow it to make a startling return? Your imagination could shake you to the core. It could really WOW you!
Yes–you can find your way back to your imagination, if you give it a chance, but don’t you wish you had kept that path open all along?
