inspiration A message from Sandy. In Dead Poet’s Society, Robin Williams gave a moving performance as a fictional prep school instructor who share his love of literature and poetry, inspiring his students to “seize the day” and choose their own destinies.

And who could forget the diminutive but powerful Yoda, who mentored the young Jedi Knight, Luke Skywalker. How many times have you heard people quote Yoda when someone says they will try to get something done: “Do or do not, there is no try.”

These films depict the power of having a mentor, someone who believes in you and encourages you to do your best——and perhaps reach for a goal you didn’t think you could achieve.

So, what exactly is a mentor? According to  the dictionary, mentor has come to mean ” a trusted counselor and guide.” Mentors come in many forms. The best known–and the the type of mentor that has had a strong impact on your life,is often the professional who takes a less experienced colleague under their wing. Your professional mentor may challenge you, advise against common pitfalls, help navigate office politics, and assist in career decision making.

A personal mentor can be a trusted friend or relative who takes an active interest in your life–offering advice, encouragement, or a shoulder to cry on. A spiritual mentor is often a religious leader that may offer insight, guidance, and wisdom.

Do you have a mentor? A special person who inspired you to challenge yourself and reach for something more—we would  love to hear your story.
